ABSTRACT
As soon as it stopped being used for its original purposes when the local executive and legislative chambers were moved to another place in 1968, the old Town Hall of Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, began deteriorating due to abandon and misuse.
Listing by the local Council in 1979 was not enough to ensure the preservation of the building.
In 1982, a group of people led a conservationist movement, the main goal of which was the restoration of the old Town Hall.
The process began in 1985 and ended in 1986. The Rio-Pardense Museum was set up in the building immediately.
The experience held in Sao José do Rio Pardo is analysed in this thesis within the greater context of our cultural heritage.
